France has the best geographic endowment in Western Europe — wide plains, Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts, navigable rivers — but its northeastern edge fades into the Northern European Plain with no natural wall, the gap through which 1870, 1914, and 1940 arrived. European integration is, among other things, France's answer to that open door.
