Taiwan is a mountain island commanding the first island chain off China's coast — and the chokepoint through which advanced semiconductors reach the world. For Beijing it is the gap in its maritime wall; for Washington it is the cork. The strait between is only ~130 km wide, and everything about the standoff follows from that number.
