Vietnam is a long coastal ribbon pinned between the sea and the mountains, anchored by two rice deltas — the Red River in the north and the Mekong in the south. That stretched shape has always made the country hard to unify and easy to invade along, and puts it on the front line of both South China Sea disputes and Mekong water politics.
