The Sahara is less a desert than an ocean of sand that split Africa in two — Mediterranean north, sub-Saharan south — with trade and religion crossing by caravan 'ports' like Timbuktu. Modern borders drawn straight across it ignore that logic, which is part of why its rim states struggle to control their own interiors.
