Taiwan is a mountainous island at the pivot of the First Island Chain, its rugged spine facing the Pacific and its populated plains facing China across a 130 km strait. That position — the gap in China's maritime wall and the cork in it for the US — makes a single island one of the world's most dangerous flashpoints.
