The Korean peninsula is a dagger pointed at three empires — Chinese, Russian, Japanese — which is why each has fought over it. Its division at the 38th parallel is pure geography-as-politics: a buffer preserved because none of its neighbors can accept another's soldiers on the whole peninsula.
