Ural Mountains

The Urals are the low, old range Russians call the edge of Europe — more symbol than barrier, low enough to march across. Their real role: mineral vault and the line behind which Soviet industry was evacuated in 1941. Russia's lack of a *real* eastern wall is why it fears the western plain so much.
