River

Niger

The Niger takes a great puzzling arc through West Africa — flowing inland toward the Sahara before bending south to the sea — creating the inland delta that made Timbuktu a trade hub. Like most African rivers it is broken by rapids and reaches the ocean through an oil-soaked delta, more a local lifeline than a highway.
