Rhine

The Rhine is why the Dutch and Germans are rich: a deep, calm, navigable river running from industrial heartland to the world's great ports at its mouth. Barge freight is so cheap that the Rhine valley became Europe's economic spine — and France and Germany fought over its banks for three centuries until they built the EU around it.
