The Suez Canal is the seam between Europe and Asia, carrying around 12% of world trade in a sea-level trench through Egypt. It turns Egypt's desert into a global valve — and, as 2021's grounding and the Red Sea crises show, a single blockage there reroutes the whole world around Africa.
