Tigris

The Tigris, with the Euphrates, framed Mesopotamia — the 'land between the rivers' where cities and states were first invented. Both rivers rise in Turkey, which means Turkish dams now control the water that Syria and Iraq depend on downstream: an upstream-downstream tension as old as civilization and newly sharp.
