Red Sea

The Red Sea is the Suez shortcut between Europe and Asia — 12% of world trade in a narrow trench with pirates at one end (Bab el-Mandeb) and a canal at the other. Houthi missiles proved in 2024 how cheaply the trench can be closed: rerouting around Africa adds ~10 days per voyage.
