Strait of Malacca

The Strait of Malacca is the hinge of Asia: a quarter of world trade and most of China's and Japan's oil pass a channel 2.8 km wide at its narrowest. China calls its vulnerability here the 'Malacca Dilemma' — the anxiety driving pipelines through Myanmar, the Belt and Road, and a blue-water navy.
